Is Your Yard Holding Water Where It Shouldn't?

Yard Image

Standing water, muddy spots that never dry out, erosion on a slope, or water creeping toward your foundation. These are not minor annoyances. Left alone, they get worse every season.

We design and install yard drainage solutions for homeowners across Minneapolis, Edina, St. Paul, and the Twin Cities metro. Every fix starts with a site visit where we figure out exactly where the water is coming from and where it needs to go.

We are long time customers of Minnehaha Falls Landscaping. As I sit on my porch watching the monarch butterflies enjoying my pollinator garden I appreciate the service we’ve had over the years. It started with their snow removal service as we decided doing it ourselves was too much. Next up were the pollinator gardens and replacing our lawn with no mow bee gardens. This year we added garden maintenance to the mix so gardening is not a chore but is enjoyable. We recommend them very highly.

Minnehaha Falls landscaping did an amazing job transforming our yard. They added beautiful plantings that made the yard feel fresh and new. The lighting they installed really makes everything shine at night. They were professional, creative and very easy to work with. We have had so many compliments from our neighbors! I highly recommend to anyone!

What We Install

French Drains and Drain Tile

The most common fix for yards that stay wet. A perforated pipe set in gravel below ground intercepts water before it pools and redirects it away from your lawn, foundation, or garden beds. On Minneapolis clay soil, this is often the first tool we reach for.

Yard Regrading

Sometimes the ground is simply sloped the wrong way. Water should move away from your house at a minimum 2% grade for the first ten feet. If it doesn’t, we regrade to correct it. This is one of the most cost-effective solutions when the slope is the root cause.

Catch Basins and Channel Drains

Good for low spots in yards, driveways, and patios where surface water collects fast. A catch basin captures water at the problem point and connects it to an underground pipe that carries it off the property.

Swales

A graded channel, either open or planted, that moves water across the yard to a safe outlet. Swales work well when a neighbor’s lot drains onto yours or when the yard has a natural low run we can work with.

Downspout Extensions and Underground Discharge

A lot of drainage problems start at the roofline. Downspouts that dump water two feet from the foundation are a common culprit. We extend them underground and discharge the water well away from the house.

Rain Gardens

A Minnehaha Falls specialty. Instead of just moving water off the property, a rain garden captures it, filters it through native plants and soil, and lets it absorb naturally. Better for your yard and better for local waterways.

Dry Creek Beds

A functional and attractive option for yards with a natural drainage path. The creek bed channels water during rain events, while looking like a designed landscape feature the rest of the time.

How the Process Works

On-site assessment.

We come to your property, walk the yard, and look at where water is entering, pooling, and draining. We ask about your basement, your slope, and how the yard behaves after a heavy rain. This visit is free.

Diagnosis and recommendation.

After the walkthrough, we tell you exactly what is causing the problem and what we recommend to fix it. No vague estimates. You get a clear plan with options if more than one solution makes sense for your site.

Detailed estimate.

You receive an itemized quote so you know what every part of the project costs before any work begins. No surprises.

Installation.

Our in-house crew handles everything. Utility marking, excavation, pipe and gravel installation, catch basins, regrading, whatever your system requires. We work carefully around existing landscaping.

Cleanup and walkthrough.

We restore any disturbed lawn or garden areas with seed or mulch and do a final walkthrough with you to confirm everything is working as designed.

Why Minneapolis Yards Have So Many Drainage Problems

Twin Cities soil is heavy clay. It doesn’t absorb water quickly, which means runoff sits on the surface longer than it should. Add a frost cycle that shifts and heaves the ground each winter, steep lots in older Minneapolis neighborhoods, and the spring snowmelt that hits all at once, and you have the conditions for persistent drainage problems.

A yard drainage system that works here needs to account for all of that. Generic installs that ignore soil type and freeze depth fail within a few seasons. We design for Minnesota conditions, not just the problem in front of us.

What Makes Our Approach Different

You have options for drainage contractors in Minneapolis. Here is why homeowners choose us:

  • Certified Soil Life Consultant on staff

We look at drainage as a soil health problem, not just a plumbing problem. That changes how we design and what we recommend.

  • Ecological and native plant integration

We pair drainage fixes with rain gardens, native plantings, and low-maintenance ground covers that help the yard absorb and filter water naturally.

  • In-house crew, no subcontractors

The team that designs your system installs it. One point of contact, clear accountability.

  • Free on-site assessment

We visit your property, walk the drainage path, and give you a clear recommendation before any commitment.

  • Connected services

Many drainage problems are tied to slope and grade issues that also call for a retaining wall, a rain garden, or a regraded planting bed. We handle all of it.

Stop Letting Water Damage Your Yard and Foundation

Water problems in your yard are not going to fix themselves. The longer they sit, the more damage they do to your foundation, your soil, and your landscape.

If you have standing water, a slope that drains the wrong way, or spots in your yard that stay wet all season, we can help. Minnehaha Falls Landscaping designs and installs yard drainage solutions across the Twin Cities.

Frequently Asked Questions

That is what the site visit is for. The right solution depends on where the water is coming from, your soil type, your yard's slope, and where we can safely discharge the water. We do not recommend a solution until we have seen the property.

It depends on the scope. A downspout extension is a minor fix. A full French drain system with catch basins and regrading is a larger project. We provide a detailed itemized estimate after the site visit so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Yes. This is one of the most common problems we see. Depending on the severity, the fix might be regrading, a French drain along the foundation, a swale to redirect flow, or a combination of all three.

There is some disruption involved in any underground drainage work. We work carefully, mark utilities before breaking ground, and restore disturbed areas with seed or mulch before we leave.

Yes, when they are sized and planted correctly. A properly designed rain garden can absorb a significant amount of runoff from a roof or slope. They also support pollinators and reduce the load on storm sewer systems. It is one of our favorite solutions when the site allows for it.
