Minnesota Bee Lawns

It’s that time of year in Minnesota where people find themselves pouring over seed catalogs, searching the web for landscape contractors, and planning for spring. After a long winter, our imaginations are ready to sprout along with verdant green foliage and bright spring blooms.

What is a Bee Lawn?

Though you may have already caught the buzz, many folks still don’t know. A bee lawn is a low-maintenance alternative to lawns that makes it easy to support pollinators in your own yard.

  • White clover: the basis of most bee lawns because it is drought resistant and no mow.
  • Fescue grass: a no-mow grass that grows 10-12”.
  • Thyme: pink blooms in the hot sunny zones of your yard. Hugs the ground.
  • Self-heal: purple blooms couldn’t be lovelier. MN native plant.
  • Yarrow: Another MN native, soft textured foliage.

Bee lawns are easy to install.

We offer two installation options, rapid and moderate.

Rapid Transition: We remove the existing sod then we aerate, seed, compost, seed again, and cover with a seed blanket all in one visit. We provide watering directions and you have an instant bee lawn within 1-2 months.

Moderate Transition: We aerate and over-seed 3 times per year for 3 years. This is the lower cost option for people who want to start a new bee lawn.

Benefits of Bee Lawns:

  1. Low-Maintenance: You won’t need to mow, fertilize, or water your new bee lawn after it is established.
  2. Pollinators: Bee lawns have been scientifically proven to support over 60 species of bees in Minnesota. In addition to bees, bee lawns support moths and butterflies.
  3. Time and Labor Savings: Many of our bee lawn clients find they have more time for the important things in life, like napping. Bee lawns reduce the cost of home maintenance, because the help you save money for a rainy day.
  4. Drought Resistant: Bee lawns are very drought resistant. After they are established, they won’t need watering even in droughts.
  5. Aesthetic Charm: Bee lawns are delightful with blooms and varying heights and textures. Bee lawns offer a natural “meadow” style aesthetic.

Bee lawns are playing a critical role in protecting pollinators in Minnesota and beyond. Home owners across the Twin Cities are finding discovering bee lawns as a way to save time and money while helping the local environment.
