Bee Lawn Benefits in Minneapolis
Have you heard of a bee lawn, oh so fair? A lawn that’s filled with blooms, and buzzing with air! […]
This vibrant and sustainable alternative to traditional grass lawns combines clover, thyme, and self-heal with a no-mow fescue grass mix for a beautiful landscape that supports local pollinators!
A bee lawn is a blend of turfgrass and flowering plants that provides nectar and habitat for pollinators. These lawns are not only visually appealing but also play a crucial role in supporting local ecosystems.
Our team of experts will design a custom bee lawn tailored to your landscape. We select a mix of native grasses and low-growing flowering plants that thrive in your local environment. The process includes soil preparation, planting, and initial care to ensure successful establishment.
We choose a variety of flowering plants that bloom at different times of the year, providing continuous forage for pollinators. Common choices include Dutch white clover, self-heal, creeping thyme, and other native wildflowers.
Maintaining a bee lawn is straightforward but requires specific practices. Our services include seasonal mowing, organic and pollinator-friendly fertilization and weed management, and irrigation.
They installed a butterfly garden along my fence where it was difficult to mow. The new garden immediately began teeming with pollinators of all sorts including monarch butterflies. I absolutely love watching the butterflies and bumble bees dance around the garden while I sit on my back deck. The plants grew enough to fill in the garden in less than one season because of the amazing compost and soil management.
Transitioning to a bee lawn can be accomplished rapidly or at a moderate pace.
Moderate transitions tend to cost a little less and require more time to provide habitat. We aerate and over-seed through the existing lawn with pollinator seed mix three times per season. We combine this with organic soy-based fertilizer and our special liquid compost extract to give the seedlings everything they need to get growing. A moderate transition takes 1-2 seasons until the lawn is no-mow ready and filled with blooms for bees. We typically start them any time during the spring, summer, or fall.
Rapid transitions tend to cost a little more but provide habitat more immediately. We remove the existing lawn, aerate the soil, and then layer like a lasagna: Bee Lawn seed, compost, more seed, and a seed blanket covering are all laid down one after the other.
Rapid transition is combined with organic soy-based fertilizer and our special liquid compost extract to give the seedlings everything they need to take root in a single season. To reduce watering needs, we prefer to perform rapid transitions in the spring or fall.
We start each project with an on-site project consultation. The consultation costs $75, and we credit this toward your project when you sign up.
The Minnesota Legislature recently set aside funding to encourage homeowners to grow bee lawns. Once this program is up and running, we’ll help clients navigate the program and take advantage of this opportunity to pollinate the community!
